The Perfect Cup Of Hot Cocoa

Here in San Francisco, it’s cold, windy and extremely wet. And there is nothing better in this cold weather than a delicious big cup of hot cocoa!

Come on let’s face it, wether you are 3 or 83, everyone loves a good old fashioned hot cocoa, specially when it’s cold outside. So I figured I could share with you some tips and twists on the old fashioned cup of hot cocoa that you can try this winter.

1- Cinnamon Stick Hot Cocoa:

If you are a cinnamon fanatic this one is for you. After you finish making your cocoa the way you usually make, just pour it in your favorite mug and then add a cinnamon stick in it. Leave it for a couple of minutes, then stir the stick in the mug so it can give all it’s flavor. You can either take it out, if you want a more subtle taste, or leave it for a strong kick of cinnamon. Also you can use the stick as straw and drink directly form it!

PS: a small dash of nutmeg is also good in a hot cocoa. Just sprinkle a little on top of the hot cocoa after you pour it.

2- Orange Flavored Hot Cocoa:

One of my favorite snacks, is chocolate covered orange peel. They are so tasty and combine two flavors that are, kinda, a match made in heaven; Orange and Chocolate!

So next time you are making hot cocoa, either add a small piece of orange peel to the mix or some orange zest. Let it boil well, then remove the peel before serving. You can use the rest of the orange peel as a decorative item on the cup if you like.

I highly recommend this recipe, it is really good!

3- Mint Flavored Hot Cocoa:

For this recipe, while making the hot cocoa just add a few mint leaves into a tea infuser and drop it in the cocoa. Let it simmer for a few mints, then remove it before serving. Use some mint leaves to decorate the cup or the tray. The contast between the colors of the mint and the hot cocoa is very nice.

4- Candy Cane Hot Cocoa:

What a better way to celebrate the holiday than sipping a delicious hot drink in front of the Christmas tree? So make your favorite recipe of hot cocoa and serve it in some festive mugs, than add a candy cane in each mug. Stir around the mug a bit to infuse the flavors, but beware as the candy cane is sweet you will have to reduce the initial sweetness of the hot cocoa in your recipe so it won’t come up super sweet!

5- Adults Version of Hot cocoa:

If you are hosting an ugly sweeter party for your friends or a cozy Christmas gathering, add a shot of Bailey’s in each cup (for the legal drinkers only). It tastes really good and well, booze make every party better!

Hot cocoa can be made in a thousand different way, be creative and add whatever flavor you like, a drop of caramel, some eggnog or some bacon (Hey, who knows it could be good!) just make it your own and own it!

If you are hosting a party this season why not have a make your own hot cocoa table. Lay out some whip cream, marshmallow, cinnamon stick, Bailey’s, caramel sauce, white chocolate sauce, candy cane … Let it be fun!
