Dress Like The Girl Boss You Are!

One of my favorite books, The Rules of Work by Richard Templar, mentions how we should dress for the job we want, not the job we have, and I totally agree.

IMG_9845

Even though your work speaks louder than everything, the way we look and carry ourselves has a lot to do with how people perceive us. If you want to be a manager, dress like one (and of course act like one too). I often find business attire quite boring. Same old pant-suits, white buttoned shirts and boring black shoes. People tend to stick to a specific color scheme in their “safe zone”. It’s true that certain fashion rules should be obeyed in the business world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and be creative too. You’re a girl boss, so dress like it!

If you’re afraid of mixing colors, try mixing different textures in a single outfit. If worn respectfully, even lace can be work appropriate. Also, layering is always a good way to create more dimension while staying fashionable. Wear a jacket on top instead of just a long sleeved shirt and why not a midi skirt with tights instead of those same old boring pants?

Accessories can always elevate your outfit to the next level. This beautiful Burberry watch is a perfect example of how a simple piece can elevate a whole outfit. Plus, it’s not only work appropriate but I get a lot of use out of it on many different occasions. Maybe tie a scarf around your neck or wear a beautiful multi layers necklace to jazz it up a little?

Another tip for you: don’t be afraid of colors. If you think bold bright colors wouldn’t be appropriate for where you work, you can always pair neutrals or blush colors with deeper colors such as olive green, burgundy, forest green… It doesn’t have to all be black and navy! If you have a certain color scheme you have to follow, you can always add a touch of color through make up or accessories.

Work clothes shouldn’t be boring and they shouldn’t also be just work clothes. Try to get pieces that you can easily transition into going out or special occasion type of outfit. You should get excited getting dressed everyday. So tomorrow morning dress like the girl boss you are!

Have a great Monday beautiful girl bosses!

Xoxo,

Tamara

Huge fan of everything you’ve written, Tamara. No woman should “dumb down” her style just to fit into a work culture, and I for one am a big proponent of #femalepower of the entire #empowerment movement 🙂 in my first job, at Ernst & Young, the dresscode was horribly rigid. Three colours, black + white + navy, and that was it. No pants for women. As you can imagine, I struggled and left, and have never looked back save in full rainbow technicolour vision GRIN

I’m also a big fan of your blazer here, are those trims leather? So cool.

Do come over to my Project Sister Act link-up if you have a moment, Tamara, it would be lovely if you shared this outfit xoxo

The white blazer is really stunning!
I agree with you, work clothes don’t have to be boring. But I’d also say be careful not to go overboard, especially in a new job or if you’re interviewing for one. At a place I used to work a young woman came in for an interview for a manager position wearing a bright coral blazer and a mini-skirt. Honestly she looked gorgeous, but it was absolutely not appropriate for the occasion and her credibility as a potential manager took a hit. She wasn’t hired and people kept talking of her poor outfit choice afterwards. It’s sad but we have to be aware that a lot of workplaces are very conventional. A few tasteful accessories may be better than a statement piece for an interview if you’re not sure what the company’s dress code is!
